Building a saree wardrobe that covers the whole year
Five sarees, five kinds of day — a simple way to think about what to buy next.
Most of us own more sarees than we wear. The ones that come out again and again tend to cover a particular kind of day — and once you see the gaps, it’s easy to know what to buy next.
Five days, five sarees
- Everyday: soft cotton you can wear to work and wash at home
- Boishakh and puja: an ivory saree with a red border
- Daytime events: hand-painted or printed cotton
- Holud: half silk in a warm colour
- Weddings: one good silk, chosen for the colour you love most
Buy slowly
When something is missing, wait before you buy. If you still want it a month later, choose the best version you can — and the colour you already reach for, not the one you think you should.
